Schools, colleges still not allowed to open: MHA

New Delhi: The Home Ministry said tonight that no decision has been taken to open schools and colleges and all educational institutions across the country are still prohibited from opening. The Home Ministry spokesperson's statement comes after a section of the media reported that the ministry has given permission to all schools to open schools.

"No such decision taken by MHA. All Educational institutions are still prohibited to open, throughout the country," the spokesperson tweeted. All educational institutions have been shut since mid-March -- some of them from March 25 when the nationwide lockdown started -- to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

The last less stringent lockdown still continues, with the ministry allowing state boards, on May 20, to conduct pending board exams for classes 10 and 12. The ministry has allowed 3,000 schools to be opened for evaluation by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examination. Later, 12,000 more schools were allowed to open.

The nationwide lockdown was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 for 21 days in a bid to combat the pandemic. It was first extended till May 3 and again till May 17. The lockdown has now been extended till May 31.
